Stage show notes by Stan Bryant: Some guy dressed in full cowboy attire with a huge white hat on and holding a rope introduces them in a real low gravelly voice. They came out on the conveyor belts on each side of the drums up on the drum riser. That was the only time the conveyors were used during the whole show. The front of the risers looked like long logs and behind the drums and amps they had metal frames constructed of different shapes covered (stretched) with sheets, and they also made a tunnel going back behind the drums. That's where they came out from and also went back through when they left. During the show, they projected wild colors and patterns on the sheets... that was pretty cool.
Stage show notes by Sean Clay: The boys looked great... previous comments on this list about Frank Beard are un-founded. He has a new, tight haircut pulled back into a ponytail, which gives him a new look. The trio looked healthy and moved around the stage a lot. The stage set up was exactly as others have described, with white geometric shapes on the background, stacks of purple speaker cabinets, and Billy's stack of effects equipment with the light bulb suspended above it. No fireworks, no lasers, and no dancers [bummer]... although they did use a fog machine sparingly. As noted in my post, our boys seemed to move around the stage a little more this time [more than the Rhythmeen shows I attended]. Dusty and Billy have some new moves choreographed...example: during Just Got Paid, they abruptly stopped playing and stroke their beards simultaneously while the crowd roared. Then slapping each other a 'high five', they resume the jammin'. It's the little things like that which make ZZTop so unique!
Stage show notes by Mike Thacker: A female voice announced over the p.a. system- "It's twenty minutes 'till Star-Time". This continued as a countdown, each interval being announced over the house system as "Star-Time". Then, as one of your contributors has stated, at Knoxville, TN, a lone announcer dressed in fancy black rodeo/cowboy/western duds holding only a microphone & a neatly coiled "rodeo rustler" rope, asked "Are you ready for Star-Time?" (this was the same introduction we hear on the new album, & seemed like the cowpoke was only pretending to speak into the mic.- probably track #9 on "XXX"). Billy, Dusty, & Frank sounded as great as ever as they ripped thru one ZZ classic after another- sporting new guitars, new drums, different amp stacks (a cool purple tolex-covered w/cream speaker grillecloth, which looked awesome when various colored lighting was illuminated thereupon) and Billy's Expandora tree & "Dog Head" apparatus. What appeared to be white sheets strung across the stage with cables ultimately was an avant-garde futuristic/ice-age looking backdrop cleverly placed for ultimate shading & lighting effect, along with the rock/log riser (this also discreetly hid the treadmills, which were directly in front of the amp stacks- the Boyzz used these only once during the entire show). The Boyzz set was tight, vicious, & was accompanied by plenty of what we expect from our Heroes- cool, hip moves by Billy & Dusty, as only they can, with Mr. Beard slammin' & thrashin' away like there's no tomorrow!
Stage show notes by Pete Zurich: The boyzz used the conveyor belts twice in Chicago; look for Gibbons to smoke his cigar and show off his ZZ hat de Afrique. He also had some 'trouble' with his guitar, stabbing at it with one of the daggers and eventually tossing the dagger across the stage. Near the end of the show the boyzz paid some attention to the dog, adjusting and petting it, and jamming for it, which caused the lightbulb over its head to shine brightly.
Show notes by Rhonda: All three looked healthy and like they were having the time of their lives. They used the conveyor belts once, and used the fuzzy guitars for Legs. Petting and worshiping of the Dog happened at the end of the show. Dusty did his two solos (I Loved A Woman & Teddy Bear) back to back. Great show!

Notes & Review by Clay Gregory:

This concert represents the 25th year anniversary of my first ZZ Top show. Since that March 1977 show at the old Boston Garden I have seen every tour a number of times. I believe I have seen the boyzz about 40-45 times in the northeast.

Pre- concert: There were three or four different T shirts for sale (@$35ea.) as well as the usual key chains and sunglasses.
1. A country tribute T- black same as the cover
2. A white T with a line drawing of the boyzz and the names Dusty, Willy and Beardless
3. A T with the state of Texas outline and pictures of each album cover within the outline

I think I'll wait to see what Noreen gets after the tour. I was looking for a "casino 2002" but didn't see anything

Crowd: Full house (10,000?), late arriving but very enthusiastic. Most looked over 40.

Stage: very small stage and set. The vintage mic stands were probably only 12 feet in front of the drum riser. The backdrop looks like Xmas tinsel. They had 3 of those new 2 dimensional purple cactus and two tumbleweeds. Lap dog was on stage but no light bulb for La Grange. BTW lap dogs eyes and mouth light up red during the show. They had 6 guitar and 6 bass speakers on either side of the drums. The cabinets were purple and the face cloth was white. The drum riser was only about a foot high. Purple drums - a small kit with one floor bass. The equipment off stage was also very sparse. I saw only one table and one effects rack on Billy's side.

Crew: I saw Billy Hale in his red suit taking care of Dusty. No sign of Elwood unless he has gone to a more "normal" look. Only two guys sat on Billy's side all night.

Instruments: Frank had the small purple kit. Billy used one Les Paul style guitar for most of the show. The strap had the monkey on his back. He used another Les Paul for Dust my Broom and the fuzzy white explorer for Legs. He is taking about 5 of those Les Pauls on this tour. Dusty used 2 different fenders for most of the show and the custom XXX bass for the encore. For the first time ever I saw Dusty fixing the tuning of his instrument during one of the songs. He usually just thumps what they give him.

Attire: The XXX sequined coats. Dusty didn't wear his riding boots. He just had black jeans with regular black cowboy boots. Frank had the usual "too big" black T shirt. Billy wore his hat all night and Dusty wore the beret. No cowboy hats this time.

The show: No opening act. The Top opened at 8:15 with TSBoogie after the Ross Mitchel intro. The sound was real muddy at first. You would think that a 6 mos. old arena would have better sound. Anyway, the boyzz proceeded to rip it up for an hour and 35 minutes. The set list was the same as already posted. It was great to hear Beer Drinkers, I Thank You (with Dusty singing the 2nd verse), Mexican Blackbird- the boyzz stopped playing for the line "she spreads like an eagle" to huge applause. Dust my Broom also rocked. Billy really let go on Rough Boy. People always seem to get up for a bathroom break during I loved a Woman and Bang Bang but I thought they were great. I should also note that Billy looked healthier than he did during the entire decade of the 90's. Billy and Dusty did all the usual dance steps. I think one of the highlights of the show was "Future Blues". Although, people on the internet claim this is an old song, I don't think so. I think Billy said it was new during his little intro. Anyway, it smokes - a mid tempo blues shuffle which features Dusty on vocals. At the end Billy really rips off some great licks and then it comes to a weird ZZ ending. I hope it is a new tune on the next CD. The show ended at 9:50 with La Grange (and the "surfs up" break) and Tush. Billy enjoyed his cigar during the slide solo. This was the only time he played slide for us on this night although the guy behind me kept yelling for Just Got Paid. I never realized that the band just stands behind the stage before the encore. They heard a real loud and pumped crowd last night. When security wasn't pushing people back in their seat the floor was up and dancing. See you at the next show. Stay clean...
